What is fimbriated fold?

The fimbriated fold, also known as the plica fimbriata, is a small, ridge-like fold of tissue located on the inside of the upper lip. It is made up of tiny hair-like projections called papilla, which give it a fringed appearance.

The fimbriated fold is not present in all individuals and may vary in size and shape. It is believed to serve a sensory function, providing feedback during speech and eating.

In rare cases, the fimbriated fold may become elongated or inflamed, leading to a condition known as plicae fimbriata hypertrophy. This may cause discomfort or sensitivity in the affected area, but is typically harmless and does not require treatment.
